The “Why” Behind Lotus & Sage

No one should have to go through illness or injury alone. People should have help when they need it. Human beings are social creatures after all. I couldn’t find anyone when I went through sepsis four times, but fortunately my husband was there when I dealt with osteonecrosis. Each of my recoveries I could have desperately used experts and information to encourage me on my path, but those all were difficult to find and access. In order to make any progress at all, I ended up teaching myself many of the things that I share here. My certifications in yoga and health coaching all came about because I needed a way to deal with the pain my body was in. Once I had learned what I could to help myself, I knew I had to share this knowledge with anyone else that could use it.

If my knowledge can help fill the disconnect between doctors, health care, exercise and nutrition programs, people looking for help, and real life needs, then I am doing something good. There is so much uncovered ground between “healthy” and what doctors will take care of. I’m not saying that’s any fault of the doctors, it’s just a need that isn’t addressed at this time. Then, there is the matter of mental health and our isolated environment already pose long-term problems for people facing any amount of time longer than 7 days off their feet. Deconditioning starts to seriously begin within 7 days, including cognitive decline, and social isolation increases this impact. This increases the risks of muscle loss, heart problems, development of diabetes, exacerbation of anxiety and depression, increased pain, and insomnia, and increased cognitive decline leading to dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Simple exercises, even from bed, can make a huge difference on whether someone experiences functional decline and to what extent. Also, staying mentally and socially active is equally important. Staying involved in learning and participating with even an online community can benefit people significantly, both before and after extended periods of sedentary activity. I did not know these things when I went through my health issues, but now that I do, my hope is to help as many people as I possibly can.

As the owner and founder of Sage & Lotus, my goal is to save as many people as possible from the horrific pain and the demoralizing crying and utter reliance on my husband for everything as possible. I don’t want anyone else to have to endure what I did. I want to help people to be back to their happy, healthy selves as quick as possible and to feel empowered in their recovery.
